A Popcorn Stitch Tutorial & Free Crochet Pattern

The Popcorn stitch is made up of several complete double crochet stitches worked in the same stitch and pulled together by joining the first and last stitch. In this tutorial I will show you how to make a five double crochet popcorn stitch and teach you to make a cute flower embellishment using the popcorn stitch. Then you can follow along to create a simple bracelet band to attach the flower to.

Materials

Yarn – any worsted weight #4 yarn. In this tutorial I used Classic Cotton Big Ball™ Ombre Yarn by Loops & Threads® in Vintage Floral for the band and Classic Cotton Big Ball™ Solid Yarn by Loops & Threads® in Bubblegum for the flower. You don’t have to use cotton yarn, but I prefer to use natural fibers when creating pieces for children.
Hook size US H-8(5 mm)
Darning needle
Scissors

Abbreviations & Stitches

beg ch – beginning chain
ch – chain
ch-sp – chain space
dc – double crochet
hdc – half double crochet
mc – magic circle
sc – single crochet
sc -blo – single crochet in the back loop only
ss – slip stitch
st(s) – stitch(es)
yo – yarn over
5dc-pop – five double crochet popcorn

How to Crochet the Popcorn Stitch

I am going to give you the mechanics of the stitch here as a quick reference, but don’t worry if you are confused. We will go over the popcorn stitch as we create the flower, with step by step photos and clear instructions.

Work 5dc into the same stitch. Pull the loop on hook to stretch it out. Remove hook and insert it into the top of the first dc. Re-insert hook into stretched out loop and pull tight. Pull the same loop through the top of the first dc, drawing the stitches together.

Popcorn Stitch Flower Bracelet | Free Pattern

Step 1 – Create the Popcorn Stitch Flower.

Make a magic circle.

Round 1: Ch 2 in mc. 8 hdc in mc. Join with ss to first hdc.

To make a popcorn stitch flower start 8hdc in a magic circle. Join to first hdc with a Ss.

Round 2: Ch 3 (counts as first dc), 4dc in first st.

To create the first popcorn stitch petal, ch 3 and 4 DC in same stitch.

Stretch out loop on hook.

Remove hook from loop and insert it into the top of the ch 3.

Insert your hook into the top of the chain 3.

Insert the hook back into stretched loop and pull tight.

Insert your hook into the stretched loop and tighten it around your hook.

Pull the loop through the top of the ch 3, drawing all sts together. First 5dc-pop created.

Ch 2 and 5 dc-pop in next st:

5dc in next st, stretch loop on hook.

For the second popcorn stitch 5dc in next st and stretch out the loop on hook.

Remove hook from stretched out loop and insert under the top 2 loops of the first dc.

Insert the hook back into the stretched out loop, tighten and pull through the top of the first dc. This draws the stitches together and forms the 5dc-pop.

Insert the hook back into the stretched out loop, tighten and pull through the top of the first dc. This draws the stitches together and forms the second popcorn stitch.

Ch2 and 5-dc pop in each st around (8 total 5dc-pop).

Ch 2 and join to top of first ch 3. Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing onto band.

Ch 2 and join with a ss to the top of the first ch3. This completes the popcorn stitch flower.

Step 2 – Crochet the Bracelet Band

Notes

Measure the wrist the bracelet is going on or use the measurements below.

3-7 year old – 13cm

7-10 year old – 14cm

You will continue repeating row 2 until your band measures the correct length.

Ch 7

Row 1: Sc in second ch from hook and each Ch across. (6sc)

Row 2: Ch 1, turn. Sc-blo in each st across. Insert your hook in the back loop only, yo, pull up a loop. Yo, pull through both loops on hook.

Repeat Row 2 until band is correct length.

Ch 1, turn. Fold the band in half, bringing the bottom end up against the side furthest from you. So you will have your hook on the right, ready to begin another row.

Ss in the blo of the last row and the beg ch to join the two ends of the band.

Fasten off and weave in ends. Turn the band right side out.

Step 3 – Attach the Popcorn Stitch Flower to the Band

You can sew the flower to the center of the band however you like. I used the whip stitch and sewed around the ch2 sp at the back of the flower. It was easy to hide the stitches this way. I attached it over the seam of the band to hide it also. Weave in the ends and your popcorn stitch flower bracelet is complete!
