Foundation Single Crochet Stitch

How To Crochet As An Absolute Beginner

Materials

• Yarn – you can use any yarn for this turorial.
• Hook – size recommended on yarn packaging

Abbreviations/Stitches

• ch – chain
• fsc – foundation Single crochet
• sc – single crochet
• st(s) – stitch(es)
• yo – yarn over

How to Foundation Single Crochet

Begin by making a slip knot and ch 2.

First Foundation Single Crochet

Step 1

Insert hook in to second ch from hook (the first ch made).

Step 2

Yo and pull up a loop. (2 loops on hook)

Step 3

Yo and pull through one loop. (2 loops on hook)

This creates the first ch st.

Step 4

Yo and pull through both loops. (1 loop on hook)

This completes one ch and one sc. You can see the 2 loops of the top of the stitch and the 2 loops that make the chain on the bottom.

Next Foundation Single Crochet

Step 1

We will be working into the 2 loops of the ch st.

Insert your hook into the ch st.

Step 2

Yo and pull up a loop. (2 loops on hook)

Step 3

Yo and pull through one loop. (2 loops on hook) This creates the second ch st.

Step 4

Yo and pull through both loops. (1 loop on hook)

This completes the second foundation single crochet. The finished row will lay like this, you can see the tops of the 2 sts and the 2 chs on the bottom.

Repeat steps 1-4 until your row of foundation single crochet is the desired width.

How to Work into the Foundation Single Crochet Row

I am going to work sc into my foundation ch. You will ch the correct number for whatever stitch you will be working – 1ch for sc, 2ch for hdc, etc.

Row 2

Ch1, turn. sc in first st and each st across.
