How to Crochet Granny Stripe Stitch

A Crochet Tutorial

Welcome to The Restful Stitch! Today you are going to take the iconic granny square and simplify it into stripes. This tutorial is a step by step guide with written instructions and images. With basic stitches and an easy to learn stitch pattern, the granny Stripe stitch is a great stepping stone for beginners. However, it is loved and used by experienced crocheters as well.

Crocheters create amazing art with granny stripes, from heirloom blankets to sweaters and even crocheting sleeves onto upcylced clothing (I really want to do this). I’d love to see what you make once you learn the granny stripe pattern. So let’s get started!

Materials

• You can use any yarn. I am using Loops & Threads Soft Classic in 3 colors.
  • Peach
  • Cornflower
  • Offwhite
• hook size recommended on yarn
• Scissors

Stitches & Abbreviations

• ch – chain stitch
• dc – double crochet (yo, insert hook in indicated st, yo and draw up loop. Yo, pull through 2 loops, yo pull through last 2 loops.)
• sk – skip
• sp – space
• st(s) – stitch(es)
• yo – yarn over
• 3dc – work 3 double crochet stitches into indicated st or sp

Notes

• Ch 3 always counts as first dc.
• The Sp you will work in is between each set of 3dc.
• The granny stripe stitch is a 2 row repeat pattern.

How to Crochet Granny Stripe Stitch

To Start

Crochet a foundation chain in a multiple of 3 + 2. For this tutorial I chained 14.

Row 1

Sc in the 2nd ch from the hook and each ch across. (13sc in this tutorial)

Row 2

Ch 3, turn. Dc in first st. *Sk 2 sts, 3dc in next st* Repeat from * to * to last st. 2dc in the last st, pulling next color through last 2 loops of last dc.

Row 3

Ch3, turn. 3dc in each sp across. Dc in the top of the turning ch3, pulling next color through last 2 loops of last dc.

Row 4

Ch3, turn. Dc in first st. 3dc in each sp across. 2dc in top of turning ch3, pulling next color through last 2 loops of last dc.

Repeat

Repeat Rows 3 and 4 until the project is the desired length.

Final Row of the Granny Stripe Stitch

For the final Row, I like to sc in each st across.

Ch1, turn and sc in each st across.
