The Star Stitch | A Crochet Tutorial
Today I am going to teach you how to crochet the star stitch, sometimes called the daisy stitch or the marguerite stitch. This beautiful stitch is popular in all sorts of projects, from garments to washcloths & blankets. It looks intricate, but is really quite simple to get the hang of. In this tutorial, you will learn step by step, with helpful photos, how to create the star stitch!
You will need to know the basics of crocheting to follow along. If you are an absolute beginner, please check out my tutorial for beginners first.
Materials
- Any color worsted weight (medium, #4) yarn. I am using Loops & Threads Soft Classic yarn in peach
- hook size recommended on yarn packaging.
- Scissors
Stitches & Abbreviations
- ch – chain stitch
- hdc – half double crochet – yarn over, insert hook, pull up a loop. (3 loops on hook) Yarn over pull through all 3 loops.
- sc – single crochet – Insert hook, yarn over, pull up a loop. (2 loops on hook) Yarn over, pull through 2 loops.
- ss – slip stitch
- st(s) – stitch(es)
The Star Stitch
To begin chain any even number.
Row 1
The First Star Stitch
- The first star stitch of the row is a little different than the rest of the row.
Step 1 – Insert your hook into the second ch from the hook and pull up a loop.
Step 2 – Insert hook into the next ch and pull up a loop.
Step 3 – Insert hook and pull up a loop in the next 3 chs. You should now have 6 loops on your hook.
Step 4 – Yarn over and pull through all six loops.
Step 5 – Ch 1 to create the “eye” of the star stitch.
The Second Star Stitch
Step 1 – Insert hook into the “eye” of the previous star stitch and pull up a loop.
Step 2 – Insert the hook into the “leg” of the previous star stitch and pull up a loop.
Step 3 – insert the hook into the same ch as the last leg of the previous star stitch and pull up a loop.
Step 4 – Insert the hook and pull up a loop in the next 2 chs. You should now have 6 loops on your hook.
Step 5 – Yarn over and pull through all 6 loops.
Step 6 – Ch 1 to create the “eye” of the star stitch.
Finishing Row 1
Repeat the Second Star Stitch steps 1-6 across the row to the end of your ch. Do not ch1 after the last star stitch.
The last leg of your last star stitch should be in your last ch. To complete the row, work 1 Hdc into the same ch.
Row 2
- You will repeat row 2 for every even row
Ch2 (does not count as st), 2hdc into the “eye” of the first star stitch and each “eye” across.
At the end of the row, hdc into the last st.
Row 3
- You will repeat row 3 for every odd row.
The First Star Stitch
- Again the first star stitch of the row is a little different than the rest of the row.
Step 1 – Chain 3 and insert your hook into the second ch from the hook and pull up a loop.
Step 2 – Insert hook into the next ch and pull up a loop.
Step 3 – Insert hook and pull up a loop in the first 3 sts. You should now have 6 loops on your hook.
Step 4 – Yarn over and pull through all six loops.
Step 5 – Ch 1 to create the “eye” of the star stitch.
The Second Star Stitch
These stitches are worked the same as row 1, but into the previous rows stitches instead of the chain.
Step 1 – Insert hook into the “eye” of the previous star stitch and pull up a loop.
Step 2 – Insert the hook into the “leg” of the previous star stitch and pull up a loop.
Step 3 – insert the hook into the same st as the last leg of the previous star stitch and pull up a loop.
Step 4 – Insert the hook and pull up a loop in the next 2 sts. You should now have 6 loops on your hook.
Step 5 – Yarn over and pull through all 6 loops.
Step 6 – Ch 1 to create the “eye” of the star stitch.
Finishing Row 3
Repeat steps 1-6 across the row. Do not ch1 after the last star stitch.
The last leg of your last star stitch should be in the last st. To complete the row, work 1 hdc into the same st.
Subsequent Rows
Continue repeating rows 2 & 3 to reach the desired length, ending on a row 2 repeat.
