How to Crochet The Treble Crochet Stitch
A Tutorial
The Treble Crochet stitch (abbreviated tr) is the next tallest stitch after the double crochet. It is simple to learn and works up quickly. With so much length, the treble crochet gives your project an airy texture with drape. You will find it a wonderful stitch for creating sweaters, shawls, scarves and other projects that you want to cover a lot of space, but still be light and flowy. I made an oversized sweater with this stitch and I absolutely love it. I’ll share the link at the bottom of the tutorial.

Materials
- Any yarn. In this tutorial I am using Soft Classic™ Solid Yarn by Loops & Threads®
- hook size recommended on yarn packaging.
- Scissors
Abbreviations
- ch – chain
- st(s) – stitch(es)
- tr – treble crochet
Notes
To begin the treble crochet stitch, you will chain any number. If the chain at the beginning of a row counts as a stitch, you will begin your first treble crochet in the 5th ch from the hook. If the beginning chain does not count as a stitch you will work the first treble crochet in the 4th ch from the hook. In this tutorial, the beginning chain does not count as the first stitch.
Treble Crochet Stitch
Set up
Chain any number + 3
Row 1
- Yarn over twice
- Insert hook in 4th ch from hook and yarn over
- Pull through ch (4 loops on hook)
- Yarn over and pull through 2 loops (3 loops on hook)
- Yarn over and pull through 2 loops (2 loops on hook)
- Yarn over and pull through 2 loops (1 loop on hook)
- Treble crochet stitch completed.
Repeat in next chain and continue to treble crochet in each chain across.
Row 2
Ch 3 and turn your work. Put your first tr in the first st right next to the ch3. Tr across the row of stitches. Your last tr will go in the top of the last st (not the ch3).
Repeat row 2 until your project reaches the desired length.
