How to Crochet The Single Crochet Stitch
A Tutorial for Beginners
The single crochet stitch is a widely used and versatile stitch. It is a foundational skill necessary to the art of crochet. It is abbreviated SC in patterns. In this tutorial I will provide a step by step guide with pictures. You will need to know how to form a slip knot and foundation chain. If you don’t, no worries, check out my first lesson.

That takes many different forms, but learning to crochet can be the beginning of a noble journey. If you stick with me, we will slowly explore how we can crochet for rest together. So, Let’s get started.
Materials
-Any color worsted weight (medium, #4) yarn. For this tutorial I am using Loops & Threads Soft Classic in Periwinkle
-hook size recommended on yarn packaging.
-Scissors
Single Crochet Stitch
We will begin with a slip knot and chain any number plus one. My swatch will be 10 single crochets in width so I chained 11.
A single crochet stitch is one chain tall, so we will be skipping one chain for height and working in the second chain from the hook.
First insert your hook into the second chain from your hook and yarn over.
Next pull a loop through the chain stitch. You now have 2 loops on your hook.
Now, yarn over and pull through both loops on your hook.
You should have one loop left on your hook and a completed single crochet stitch.
Let’s make another one. Insert your hook into the next chain.
Yarn over, and pull a loop through the chain. You should have 2 loops on your hook.
Next, yarn over and pull through both loops.
You should have one loop left on your hook and a second single crochet stitch made. The top of your stitches should form a v shape.
Continue with single crochet to the end of your chain.
Make one chain to create the height of the next row. Turn your work so that you are ready to work down the next row of stitches.
Insert your hook under the 2 loops that form the v of your first stitch.
Yarn over, pull a loop through the stitch. (2 loops on hook)
Yarn over and pull through both loops on hook. (one loop on hook)
Continue across the row.
